Rose Shirley Barnes, 90 of Clayburne Street Clayton, Georgia., died Monday night December 3, 2012 at her residence.
Born June 10, 1922 in Rabun County, she was the daughter of the late Jeff and Maggie Hollifield Holcomb. Rose was twice married; first to the late M.J. Shirley and after his death she married the late Calvin Barnes. She was employed in the textile industry with Clayburne MFG. Company and Burlington Industries and retired from Dairy Queen. She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church. Rose enjoyed many things in her life, like her dogs and gardening, but her greatest joy came from her family. She was proud of being a twin, a mother and grandmother to four generations. She never met a stranger and was known to all simply as “Grandma Rose”. Her sense of humor and smile, as well as her kind heart was a gift to every one she knew.
Rose was preceded in death, besides her parents and husbands, by a son, Dudley Shirley and a daughter Peggy Shirley: and by brothers, Gordon, Roy, Herbert, Sutton, Hugh, JD and Guy Holcomb and by sisters, Grace Worley, Gladys Queen and Ruth Holcomb and is survived by her twin sister, Mary Lovell of Wiley, GA., by two sons, Wendell and (Faye) Shirley of Wiley, GA, and Curtis and (Bonnie) Shirley of Clayton. Two daughters, Lorrayne and (James) Ramsey of Asheville, NC., and Lavonne and (Stanley) Starnes of Lawrenceville, GA., and a daughter-in-law Noma Shirley of Clayton. Twenty five grandchildren and twenty eight great grandchildren and eight great great grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be at the Chapel of Hunter Funeral Home Thursday December 6, 2012 2:00 P.M. conducted by Rev. Jewell Gaines, Rev. Thomas Burrell and Rev. Johnny Wright. Layman Lloyd Hunter will conduct the graveside service at the Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery.
The body is at Hunter Funeral Home where family will receive friends from 6 to 9 P.M. Wednesday evening December 5, 2012. The family is at the home on Clayburne Street.
