Nellie Turpin

July 9, 1915 — December 20, 2014

Nellie Belle York Turpin, 99, of the Warwoman Community, beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother and widow of Martin Jesse Turpin peacefully went home to meet her Lord on Saturday December 20, 2014 at her home, which was her greatest wish.

Born in Rabun County July 9, 1915 she was the oldest of eleven children born to the late John Escoe York and Martha Jane Trusty York. She was preceded in death, besides her parents, her husband, Martin Jesse Turpin of 61 years (Anversity 11-11-1939). Also a son, James Martin Turpin; two brothers, Tom York and Willie York. By three Sisters, Gladys York Watts, Mildred York Hogsed and Hazel York Farmer.

She is survived by three sons; John Russell Turpin (Oma Jean), Alvin Jesse Turpin (Linda) and Mike Edward Turpin (Tammy) all of Clayton and one daughter, Lora Turpin Jarrard (Joe) of Clayton. Also surviving are five grandchildren, Tracy Marna Turpin, John Martin Turpin, Jill Jarrard Clarke (Shawn), Jodi Jarrard Dixon and Tiffany Turpin. Four great grandchildren, Keldon Dixon, Clayton Dixon, Zachary Clarke and Ethan Clarke. By sisters, Venus York Smith, Edith York Bray and Alma York Jones all of Clayton., Helen York Andrews of Traces of Tiger, Tiger, GA., and Josephine York Lemon of Atlanta. A large family of in-laws, nephews, nieces and cousins also survive.

Several articles have been written about Nellie’s life in Foxfire Magazine, the Clayton Tribune and the most recent, the Georgia Mountain Laurel. When asked by reporters what her greatest achievement in her 90 plus years was, she replied; my children, my grandchildren and my great grandchildren. She is gone from our presence now, but she will live on in our hearts every day. Our mama, our nanny, is gone but never for gotten. She devoted her life to her family. She enjoyed working in her yard and garden, and tending her beautiful flowers. For many years she took floral arrangements to Antioch Methodist Church, where she was a member for many years.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Turpin will be Tuesday December 23, 2014 at 2:00 P.M. at the new Chapel of Hunter Funeral Home by Rev. Steve York. Burial will follow in the Turpin family cemetery on Sandy Ford Road in the Warwoman Community.
