Kate King

December 21, 1917 — February 19, 2017

Mrs. Kate Stiles King of Clayton, Georgia passed away peacefully at home on February 19, 2017. Born on December 21st, 1917 she was the eldest of 7 children born to Tom and Dell Rogers Stiles of Franklin, NC. After graduating from Franklin High School and attending Rabun Gap Nacoochee School, she married Gerald G. King in October 1939. They made their home in Clayton, GA where they raised their two daughters, Rose and Linda. Kate was a faithful member of Clayton Baptist Church where she served in the children’s programs, Carter-Miller WMU, and in her Sunday School classes. She founded the Homebound Ministry and in 1986 she authored a history of the WMU at CBC. She worked as a dental assistant and for 20 years as the bookkeeper at Clayton Motors. But, most importantly, she was the consummate wife, Mother, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother, sister and friend. A true Southern lady, she showed kindness and grace to everyone in her life and in her final years bore her illness with tremendous strength and courage. Never one to “preach,” she taught through fine example. Her life embodied the truth of Proverbs 22: 1 “A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold.”

Survivors include daughter and son-in-law Rose and Jim Donaldson of Marietta, GA, daughter and son-in-law Linda and Roy Cleveland of Gainesville, GA, granddaughter Lorie D. Hornsby of Marietta, GA, granddaughter Julie D. Moore and her husband Dr. Mark Moore of Braselton, GA, great-grandchildren Chandler and Kelsey Moore of Braselton, GA, and Cole and Sam Hornsby of Marietta, GA. Also surviving are sisters Betty Buchanan and her husband Kenneth of Sharpsburg, GA and Velma Buchanan of Franklin, NC as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Edith Summey, three brothers - Harold Stiles, Edwin Stiles and Vernon Stiles- and beloved husband Gerald to whom she was married for 58 years.

The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to Pruitt Hospice personnel Beth Jones and Olivia Dixon, Caregiver Kerstin Dreher, Dr. George LaFleur, Dr. Andrew Green, Dr. Jack Griffith, loyal friends, and loving family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Benevolence Fund at Clayton Baptist Church at 87 South Church Street, Clayton, GA 30525 or to the charity of your choice.
