J. Hugh ( “Turp”) Turpin, a long time resident of Oak Ridge, TN. Died on January 29, 2011, at Ben Atchley State Veterans Home , Knoxville , TN. The family sincerely appreciates the staff of Ben Atchley who provided superior medical care and support, as well as personal attention and many kindnesses to Mr. Turpin and his family.
Mr. Turpin was born on October 2, 1921, in Wiley, Ga. to the late Thomas Luther and Katie Taylor Turpin. He had 8 brothers and sisters, all of whom deceased except for two brothers, Jess Turpin and Albert Turpin and his wife Winnie, all of Rabun County, Ga.
Mr, Turpin leaves behind a devoted family including his wife, Ludie (nee Kelly) of more than 68 years; a son, Hugh, of Knoxville, TN. And a daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Allen Pittman of the Woodlands, Texas, and three grandchildren, Russell (Lexington, KY), Tracy Schuster and husband Stephen (Soddy Daisy, TN.) and Matthew (College Station, TX), and 2 great grandsons. He also leaves behind a circle of family members including a very special and cherished nephew, Paul Kelly , of Fort Worth, TX. two special nieces, Carmen Brown, of Greenville, SC. And Gail Kelly Lester, of Garland, TX, and a treasured and devoted brother-in-law, Gilbert A. Kelly, of Oak Ridge.
Mr. Turpin joined the US Army in 1943 and served at Fort Benning , Ga. the Aleutian Islands, Germany. After his discharge from the Army in 1946, he joined his wife in Oak Ridge, where she had relocated from Georgia with her parents, the late Earl and Margie Kelly. Mr. Turpin was employed by Roane Anderson Company, Management Services Incorporated, and the City of Oak Ridge. In 1974, he started his industrial/commercial and residential painting company until he retired in 1983.
Mr. Turpin was a member of Robertsville Baptist Church. He was a 33rd degree Scottish Rite Mason and was a member of the Kerbela Temple Shriners, Knoxville. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 199, Oak Ridge.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, February 2, 2011 from 1 to 2 P.M. at Weatherford Mortuary. The funeral will follow at 2 P.M. with Rev. Brian Scott officiating. A graveside service with military honors will be held Thursday at 1 P.M. at the Wesley Cemetery in Rabun Gap, Ga. with Rev. James Turpen officiating.
