Howard Ernest Prater, 96, of Clayton died Thursday, May 30, 2013.
He was born October 18, 1916 in Hayesville, North Carolina to William Isaac and Cora Matheson Prater.
After teaching school in Rabun County, Howard served in the army in World War II. After the war, Howard earned his bachelor’s degree in mathematics from the University of Georgia. Howard and his wife, Lois, had an independent insurance agency in Clayton for twenty-five years. He was an active member of the Clayton First United Methodist Church, the American Legion, and the Clayton Lions Club.
Howard was preceded in death by: his wife, Lois Prater, his son, Riley Prater; two brothers, Guy and Glen Parker; and four sisters, Edna Powers, Margie Prater, Myrt Lambert, and Inez Moore.
Survivors include: two sons and daughters-in-law, Cordell and Robin Prater of Sugar Hill and George and Vickie Prater of Tiger; and three grandchildren, Nicholas Prater and wife Christa of Dacula, Susan Prater of Atlanta and William Prater of Tiger.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 1, 2013 at 3:00 PM at Clayton First United Methodist Church with Rev. Dr. Charlie Green and Rev. Carol Cook officiating. Burial will be at Rabun Memory Park, Tiger, GA.
In lieu of flower, memorial donations may be made to the Clayton First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 703, Clayton, GA 30525.
