Harry Milt, 99, Clayton, Ga.


Harry Milt of Mountain City, died August 31, 2009 at his home. He was 99 years of age. Mr. Milt was born in the Ukraine to Philip and Rebecca Milt and came to the U.S. with his family in 1914. He was of the Hebrew faith.
He is survived by his wife, Jannie Warlick Milt, son Dr. Stephen Milt of Plymouth, Mass., daughter, Joanna Mitchell of Clayton, Ga. and two stepdaughters, Virginia Owen Gocke of Roswell, Ga. and Susan Owen Goldberg of New Hampshire and Clayton, Ga., five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Mr. Milt grew up in New York City. He graduated from New York University and received an M.A. Degree in Psychology from Columbia University.
Mr. Milt came to Rabun County in 1985. During his life here, he was active in several community activities. He was a member of the Rotary Club of Clayton; served as president of the Rabun County Chapter of the American Cancer Society and contributed a regular column in the Clayton Tribune, titled “People dealing with psychological aspects of human behavior. He played a major role in bringing 911 to Rabun County and was actively involved in assuring the survival of Rabun County Hospital.
In his professional life, Mr. Milt was news editor of the Washington Times Herald, Director of Public Relations for the National Mental Health Association and Coordinator of the National Anti-Smoking Program of the American Cancer Society.
He wrote five books on psychological subjects, published by New York Publishing as well as dozens of booklets and newspaper columns on similar subjects. He was a member of The American Society of Journalist and the Authors Guild. Hunter Funeral Home in charge.
