Grace Elizabeth Smith Lee, age 81, of Clayton, GA., died Friday April 2, at her home in Clayton.
She was born November 9, 1928 in Ninety- Six, SC. To the late George Davis Smith and Annie Mae Beasley Smith.
She was a member of the Clayton Baptist Church; she worked with her husband at WRLC in Toccoa, GA., they also worked together at WANS in Anderson, SC., WSNW in Seneca, SC., and at WGHC in Clayton where she wrote and delivered local news and did an on-the-air interview program called “spotlight on public affairs.” She did a regular air shift and was Vice-President and treasurer of their Corporation.
In Anderson, Grace was the West Market PTA. She was the first Worthy Matron of Ruff Chapter Order of the Eastern Star, a page at Grand Chapter, and a deputy to the Grand Conductress. In Seneca, she was the Executive Director of the Seneca Chamber of Commerce.
After Moving to Clayton, GA., IN May of 1961, she took on more community activities. She was three times President of the Clayton Junior Woman’s Club; she served two years as President of the Clayton Woman’s Club, two years as ninth District President of the Georgia Federation of the woman’s Clubs. She served as State Education Chairman of the Georgia Federation and was on the board of trustees of the Tallulah Falls School for four years. She was on the board of Directors of the Mountaineer Festival, the Rabun Theatre guide, and helped to organize the pilot club of Clayton, in 1976 She was Co- chairperson of Rabun, County’s Bi-Centennial Celebration The Rabun County Board Of Commissioners appointed her to serve on the Ambulance Study Committee. Clayton Mayor Lawrence Gillespie named her chief Register for the city. She served on the various juries including civil and criminal, Grand jury, and federal jury.
Grace has been honored with a number of Awards including Clubwomen of the year, Citizen of the year, ninth District Clubwomen of the year, Mother of the year, and Clayton Rotary Clubs Wheel Award for service above self.
She is listed in “Quest’s Who’s Who”: “Who’s Who of American Women” and is listed as a merit Mother in “Georgia Historic Mothers.” When Grace and Carroll built their home in 1965 it was dedicated in a quiet family ceremony by the Reverend J.E. Dillard. When they built their new Radio Station on US 441 it was dedicated in an on the air presentation to the community by Reverend Hal Brady.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Carroll S. Lee, Sr.; a sister, Evelyn Smith Brady; her only brother, James Davis Smith.
Survivors: one son and daughter-in-law, Carroll S. Lee, Jr. and Christine Kilby Lee of Clayton; one daughter, Karen Anita Lee of Clayton, two Sisters: Jean Smith Sherrill of Baltimore, MD, and Doris Smith Sorrow of Springfield, VA; four grandchildren: Mrs. Lori Lee Keller of Clayton, Matthew Brewer of Tiger, GA; Christopher Lee of Denver, CO; and Mrs. Karen Leanna Gonzalez of Clayton, GA; five great-grandchildren: William Elijah Brewer, Cody Lee Keller, Estella Marie Gonzalez, Christina Lynne Keller, and Joseph Gregory Gonzalez, all of Clayton, GA.
Funeral Services will be held at Clayton Baptist Church Monday April 5, 2010 at 11:00 A.M. with the Rev. Joey Thompson, Officiating.
Visitation will be Prior to the service from 9: 00 A.M. to the funeral hour. At the Clayton Baptist Church.
Graveside rites will be held at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Anderson, SC. At 3:00 P.M.

The family is at the Residence on Bleckley Drive.
