Gladys Shirley 98, Clayton

Gladys Shirley went to be with her Lord on August 23, 2013. She was born May 5, 1915, in Rabun County GA., to the late Lewis Neal Shirley and Sibbie Bynum Shirley. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers Sutton, Frank and S.T. Shirley, and three sisters Ella Shirley Dickerson, Grace Shirley Green and Clara Shirley Sibley.

She is survived by three nieces Doris Shirley Pruett and Carol Shirley Brown of Charlotte, NC, Virginia Shirley Roberts of Atlanta, GA., and four nephews Tom Shirley of Clayton, Mike Sibley of New Orleans, LA., Neal Dickerson of Rabun Gap, GA., Robert Dickerson of Carrollton, GA, and special caregiver Sue Matheson.

Gladys was a lifelong member of the Clayton Baptist Church. After graduating from high school in Clayton she attended Young Harris College and received her A.B Degree in education from Georgia State College, formally G.S.C.W. She then attended Appalachian University, Boone, N.C. receiving her M.A. Degree in Education. She was a teacher in the Rabun County School System for 43 years, retiring in 1977.

Funeral Services will be at 2:00 P.M. Tuesday August 27, 2013 at the Chapel of Hunter Funeral Home with Rev. Doyle Patterson and Layman Lloyd Hunter officiating . Burial will be in the Bethel Cemetery.

The body is at Hunter Funeral Home where family will receive friends Tuesday August 27, 2013 from 1:00 P.M. to 2:00 P.M. (the funeral hour). The family is at their respective residences.
